1998 NYETIMBER CLASSIC CUVEE ENGLISH SPARKLING WINE
I never thought I’d find myself writing this but this month’s featured drink is...English wine! Recently AKA has decided to stock the award winning 1998 NYETIMBER classic cuvee English Sparkling Wine. There aren't many positive things to say about global warming, but this is definitely one of them!
The chalky soil found in the home counties south of London is almost identical to that found in the Champagne region of France. The only thing that was preventing England having a flourishing wine industry was our climate, but that’s all changed in the last 20 years.
The English vineyard leading the way and changing everyone’s perception is Nyetimber. The estate, located in West Sussex, consists of thirty-five acres of gentle south-facing slopes planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier - all classic grape varieties of the Champagne region. The production methods are even more strictly regulated than in France– with the wines being matured for at least five years – double the minimum for Champagne.
The Nyetimber 1998 classic cuvee has won countless trophies, some of them up against French Champagnes, including the extremely prestigious ‘World’s Best Sparkling Wine’ at the 2006 International Wine & Spirit competition.
Daily Telegraph wine critic Jonathan Ray recently described the Nyetimber 98 classic cuvee as; “The cream of British. It ages for a long time in the bottle and always has a full creamy flavour. There are few Champagnes I would choose over this. Anyone who doubts the quality of English wine should try it and be prepared to be amazed. Class in a glass.”
With demand vastly out-stripping supply of this incredible wine we are very fortunate to have a limited supply here at AKA, so next time you drop buy please buy a bottle and as the wine critic says “prepare to be amazed!” |
