FEATURED COCKTAIL
The spirit world is steeped in history, and the stories behind their origins are truly fascinating, or at least we think they are. Here at AKA we offer a vast and unusual variety of spirits, Champagnes, cocktails and beers, so we thought we’d impart a little of what we have learned along the way...
In our new regular feature, we’ll be inviting AKA’s Bar Manager, Marco Torre, to talk us through the history of an infamous drinker, plus the story behind a legendary cocktail and a famous drink brand.
FEATURED COCKTAIL – COSMOPOLITAN
One of the more modern of the so-called ‘classic’ cocktails, the Cosmopolitan is thought be have been invented by Cheryl Cook, a bartender from South Beach, Florida, around 1985. She claimed that the number of people ordering Martinis, just so they could have a Martini glass in their hand, was overwhelming, so she wanted to create a drink that was more palatable, but still visually stunning in that classic glass.
The drink quickly spread from Miami to San Francisco to New York, where it was then further popularized by Toby Cecchini of Manhattan, whilst working at the Odeon in 1987-88. Cecchini adapted the recipe slightly, using Cointreau instead of Triple Sec, and fresh squeezed lime juice instead of lime cordial - his version has now become the common standard method for preparing the drink.
Normally a more popular cocktail amongst the fairer sex, perhaps due to its colour and fresh fruity flavour – the Cosmopolitan’s reputation as a girly drink was enhanced by its constant presence on hit TV show ‘Sex in the City’. Men should not be afraid to swap their pint for a Cosmo now and again, however, as it’s reputedly the favourite tipple of Robert Evans – legendary Hollywood mogul and producer of The Godfather.
In AKA we serve Cosmopolitans in a Martini glass, using SKYY citrus vodka, Cointreau, and fresh lime juice mixed with cranberry juice - resulting in a clean-tasting drink. An orange peel is usually used as a garnish.
