INFAMOUS DRINKERS FROM HISTORY

ERROL FLYNN

Born in Tasmania, Errol Flynn (1909 – 1959) was a descendent of a midshipman from HMS Bounty fame. He was a rebellious child, and when the family moved to England he managed to get expelled from every school he attended.

He shot to instant fame playing the title role in the Warner Bros' pirate epic Captain Blood (1935). His flamboyant charm and dashing magnetism quickly established Fynn as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars and the undisputed king of swashbuckler films.

On-screen he was a freedom loving rebel who fought against injustice; off-screen his passions were drinking, fighting, sex, and more drinking, making his film escapades pale into insignificance. His love life brought him considerably more fame than his career, as every leading lady he starred opposite succumbed to his charm.

In a famous story told about Flynn, in 1978 after the actor’s death, Michael Caine, Henry Fonda and Slim Pickens were having lunch on the Warner Brothers' set of The Swarm with the actress Olivia de Havilland. They were complaining that no booze was ever served on Warner sets, and when de Havilland explained that it was banned from set because Flynn used to drink so much he couldn’t work, the men wanted to hear more.

"Oh my God, Errol was something. Do you know he once got so drunk he wagered the film crew $500 that he'd have his way with me!" revealed de Havilland. The men murmured that she was a lady and that the incident must have been embarrassing for her. Olivia grinned mischievously "And you see that table over there? That's where he won his bet!"

Flynn died of a heart attack aged 50. His girlfriend at the time was 17.

Quotes from and about Errol Flynn:

"I like my whisky old and my women young!" Errol Flynn

"You can count on Errol Flynn, he'll always let you down."
David Niven

"He was a bit of a sadistic devil, was Errol, but it was done with such charm and sense of mischief that he was always forgiven."
Stuart Granger

"He was all the heroes in one magnificent, sexy, animal package. I just wish we had someone around today half as good as Flynn." Jack Warner
